The best fighters in anime are the anime swordsmen. They are a staple of Shonen anime and help to define Japanese fan culture with epic battles that show what it means for a person to be honorable.
It’s something about anime characters wielding steel that is so captivating: their quiet strength and the way they dig deep to find it. Today, we are going to be listing our top sword fighters from all of anime.
Remember that this list does not necessarily include the strongest anime swordsman.
Kirito (Sword Art Online)
Kirito is the protagonist of Sword Art Online. He has a deep knowledge of RPGs, making him an extremely powerful character. He was able to defeat big bosses such as Gleam Eyes with his Dual Blades abilities. He is a very OP anime swordsman character thanks to his real-life kendo practice. He is OP enough for shooting games with a sword.
Reinhard van Astrea (Re: Zero)
The Royal Guard currently includes the Sword Saint Reinhard von Astrea. He still wears his uniform, with his fiery red hair and blue eyes, even when he is not on duty. He is rarely present in fights, but there isn’t much tension because he always wins. He is known as the Knight of All Knights because of his incredible power. However, he is also a cool dude who assists strangers to enforce justice when necessary.
Askeladd – (Vinland Saga
Askeladd is a man who has not shown any flashy moves but still manages to accomplish some impressive feats. Thorfinn was never able to challenge Askeladd in combat. Askeladd was also able to defeat multiple enemies simultaneously, which is a sign of how dangerous he can be in battle.
Mugen (Samurai Champloo)
Mugen appears to be an naturally gifted fighter, who can easily take out trained samurai. Although he’s as powerful as Jin and has the same fighting ability, he’s not yet at his full potential. This is why Mugen is Samurai Champloo’s best fighter. His unpredictable nature and his parkour are quite entertaining.
Stain (My Hero Academia)
Stain is an individual and makes the most of his unique quirks. Stain is a pro-level hero who has average strength but can use his skills with the knife to defeat dozens of them without inflicting any injuries.
Yami Sukehiro (Black Clover)
Yami is a skilled swordsman and can defeat most people using a stick. His magic makes every swing pack a powerful punch and allows him to predict the incoming attack with pinpoint accuracy. He also has ki which allows him to deflect light attacks and hold conversations without any difficulty. Yami is not skilled in my opinion, but we can all agree that she has power.
Nobunaga Hazama (Hunter x Hunter 2011)
Nobunaga is quick and can respond to any movement within seconds. Because of his mastery of the sword, Nobunaga won’t miss vital organs if he is within a reasonable distance. Nobunaga is comparable to Ubogin, which shows how powerful he truly is.
Killer Bee (Naruto Shippuden).
It is obvious who is the superior swordsman. Killer Bee could not be satisfied with one weapon. Killer Bee decided to choose seven weapons instead. The simple fact that he can even move, let alone face Sasuke, while holding seven swords is amazing to me. His rapping is quite entertaining.
Mi-Ra Yu, (God of Highschool),
Yu Mi-Ra is the 25th Master of Moon Light Sword Style. She has been invited to compete in a high school tournament. Although she has the potential to be great, she doesn’t make much progress as she didn’t master all aspects of the game by the end. It is clear that she is well on her way to becoming a great anime swordsman. Check out the source material.
Anri Sonohara (Durarara!!)
Anri Sonohara has a lot of power but she isn’t yet proficient in the use of her sword. With this ability, she can control anyone and everything within her reach. It is mentally exhausting to use these powers. If she starts to jump around on the battlefield while using them it will be nearly impossible for her opponents to defeat her in battle.
Yato, the god of Yato, attempts to build his shrine. Yato God wears a jersey with a fluffy, fuzzy scarf. He is a delivery god, who keeps his number handy in case anyone needs it. Although he charges 5 yen per person for his assistance, don’t let that fool you. He used to be known as the “God Of Calamity”, a fearsome war god.
Akame (Akame Ga Kill)
After we discovered that Akame could hack into a hacking category, Akame was the most powerful character in her series. This was possible due to her incredible speed, agility, precision, and skill with the sword. It was possible to predict the next event, but everything changed when Akame began to show her special abilities towards an OP category. This is where a single cut is almost a guarantee of victory.
When someone learns how to be a master swordsman, the expression “may your sword be an extension or your arm” is often repeated. Hyakkimaru, however, didn’t require much assistance since his arms were swords and he was able to storm castles with demons all by himself.
Lay Glanzudlii (The Misfit of the Demon King Academy
Lay is the most powerful character in all of the anime series. He has incredible stats. It’s difficult to defeat Lay in 1vs1 combat due to his speed, strength, and waifu flavor.
Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach)
The Substitute Soul Reaper’s favourite teenager heartthrob and the edgy, orange-haired teenage idol: Ichigo Kurasaki of Bleach is known for his gentle Kurosawa swordplay combined with immense Shonen level power. Ichigo is a part of epic battles that have used all sorts of abilities to achieve his greatest transformations in swordsmanship and Zangetsu.
Guts is a powerful, but haunted warrior who can slash man and beast into small pieces without or with the Berserker armor. Guts always has a large broadsword with him, so he is ready for any danger.
Saber (Fate / Zero)
King Arthur, the great English sword fighter is known for his powerful magic and extraordinary training. Saber is a formidable warrior on the battlefield. She also has vast experience in battle strategy which makes her extremely dangerous outside of combat. It is clear that Saber deserves to be considered one of the most powerful servants in the anime franchise.
Zoro (One Piece)
Zoro is one of the Straw Hat pirates from One Piece and takes pride in his swordsmanship skills. His unique style of using three swords will amaze you. Be careful when you fight him. Stabbing Zoro is like throwing a sword into his hands and he will slice you up!
Sakata Gintoki (Gintama)
Gintoki Sakata, a samurai who wields wooden swords and a samurai, is a badass character in anime. He is known for being an expert in combat and one the strongest swordsmen. His white hair was a result of his single-handedly eliminating the Amanto hordes at the Joi War. Shinsengumi Steel with his Lake Toya wood sword continues to amaze him. They not only battle against Oboro, Yato King Hosen or Takasugi but also make for amazing action scenes that show how badass Gin is.
Hiei (Yuu Yuu Hakusho)
Hiei has a sword in his possession that he can use as both a combat weapon or as a way to channel the evil fires from the underworld. However, this ability is only occasionally used by him because of his “barbaric” physique. He also has exceptional speed, accuracy and pinpoint precision. He has a special ability that causes his opponent to slash his afterimage and ends up on top of them faster than you blink.
Levi Ackerman (Attack On Titan)
Attack on Titan changed the way sword fighting is done in anime. Sword fighting requires close-quarter combat and subtlety. But, Attack on Titan allows swordsmen to physically launch themselves at their targets, causing them to be hacked down with explosive speed. Levi Ackerman is an admirable man, but he is also feared. Levi’s strategic thinking is more than just a level playing field when paired up against larger foes, despite being significantly smaller than the Titans or his comrades.
Afro Samurai (Afro Samurai).
Afro Samurai anime is one you won’t want to miss. This show has an incredible protagonist who is able to display his extraordinary fighting skills in many situations. Afro is a great character in anime. He’s also well-written. His cold, powerful personality makes him look up at everyone else and wants what he has accomplished – revenge for his father and becoming one of most feared and bloodiest anime blades. The anime’s tone is set by the series’ first nine minutes, which feature brutal and bloody animated sword fights.
Kenshin Himura, Rurouni Kenshin
Kenshin Himura is the most famous and influential anime swordsman. He was once a tool for mass death for his feudal ruler before wandering the land in the role of a rurouni. He is polite, but not to be underestimated. He has risen through the ranks of the samurai and is well-known for his fast slashes, which can easily cut limbs.
Nanashi (Sword of the Stranger).
Nanashi is a skilled swordsman, even though his superpowers are not apparent. Like Kenshin Himura and Nanashi, Nanashi is an elite warrior who gave up his sword in order to seek redemption. They easily outperform all the others once they get started fighting.
Teresa of the Faint smile (Claymore).
As she kills her enemies, Teresa of the Faint Smile has a deadly smile. She is one of the strongest Claymores and the most powerful breed in her generation. She is fast and has an unparalleled ability to sense Yoma aura. This allows her to predict how opponents will react to her speed. Teresa never used more that ten percent of her power even when she was facing awakened Rosemary.
Otono–Tachibana Makie (Blade of the Immortal).
The last anime sword fighter is tricky because she doesn’t use swords. Haru-no Okina, also known as Old Man of Spring, is her weapon. It’s a three-sectioned staff that has double blades. The weapon is hidden inside a hollowed out mandolin-like Shamisen. She is still the best fighter to use blades in anime. If you don’t agree with this choice, keep in mind the underlying reason why the Itto Ryu were causing chaos in the anime.
