The intimacy between mother and son was brilliantly shown when they came home and listened to some songs. When summer comes, Darious does not realize what he is done because most of his friends are traveling.
After being transferred to a new place, Darius lost touch with his friends. Then the relationship shifted and he was soon with his over protective father with regard to owning a new bike. Instead of owning it, he finds many ways to repair the old while on the other hand, Monica’s mother and Malcolm’s father are entirely on the hook to raise their son.
Things took a turn when Darius somehow got involved with his friend which started with a joke and turned into a fight. In this fight, he’s brutally beaten and goes to find a man named Porter.
Porter lives on Jon’s houseboat that Darius does not know about. The two speak about this and also his father’s work.

Coming to Darius’ house, Malcolm is not at all happy about the fight and he makes him understand how these items aren’t going to help him.
And that was the reason why Darius had decided to meet Porter while watching him do some sort of exercise. It is later revealed that Darious is Monica’s son and he gave birth when he was very young, which Darious was not aware of. She took in the news and felt very open around Porter and also with her mother and father.
However things do not end here as the feud between Porter, the real father and Malcolm, the adoptive father comes to the fore.
Porter visits Darious late at night, and the latter asks him to clarify whether he has in fact caused brain damage to a child. Porter tells Darious the full truth, which Malcolm will not share.
Malcolm apparently also helped Porter beat the boy at that time. Darius and Malcolm’s already strained relationship is now damaged by the discovery. Darius fails to recognize Malcolm’s attempts to give him the best education and life possible.
At the same time, Malcolm takes precautions to keep Porter away. He called the police, who warned Porter to leave the houseboat he was on the next day, or they would use his criminal history to arrest him.
