Who is Ayrton Senna?

Ayrton Senna da Silva, the iconic Brazilian racing driver, left an unforgettable mark on Formula 1 and is widely considered one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.
Throughout his career, Senna achieved tremendous success, becoming a three-time world champion while driving for McLaren. His impressive record includes 41 Grand Prix wins, a feat which held the record for the most positions until 2006.
Tragically, on May 1, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix, a catastrophic accident changed the course of history.
On the seventh lap of the race, Senna’s car went off the track at an incredible 196 miles per hour (309 km/h) and collided with an unprotected concrete barrier after leaving the race line at Tamburello. The impact caused a harsh head injury, causing Senna’s heart to stop beating.
Despite the valiant efforts of the medics at the race, they’re able to temporarily revive him on life support until his family can arrange for the final religious rites to be performed.
In a tragic twist, it was later revealed that Senna was planning to honor the late driver Roland Ratzenberger, who tragically died during qualifying the previous day, by flying an Austrian flag hidden in the cockpit of his car.
The Brazilian government declared three days of national mourning as Senna’s body was flown back to Brazil for a state funeral. The streets of his hometown São Paulo were lined with more than three million mourning fans paying tribute to their beloved hero.
This tragic weekend, which claimed the lives of two drivers and saw many dangerous crashes, prompted a very important safety boost by the FIA, Formula 1’s governing body.
